About RHM

Here you will learn about RHM, our Pastors

and other individuals instrumental to the

establishment and continued work of

The RANCH and RANCH Hands Ministry.

what is ranch

hands ministry?

The annual RANCH event was already two

decades old when RANCH Hands Ministry

was established in 2010.

RANCH Hands Ministry is rooted in the

concept of family and love as taught by

Ranch Family matriarch Phyllis Slowtalker.

Her idea of family wasn't limited to just

her own kin; she taught to welcome

everyone into The Ranch Family.

In that same manner everyone is welcome

to be a part of RANCH Hands Ministry.

"Bear with each other and forgive one another if

any of you has a grievance against someone.

Forgive as the Lord forgave you."

Colossians 3:13

Our Beliefs

Our core values are based on Jesus’ command to

"'love the Lord your God with

all your heart and with all your soul

and with all your mind.'

This is the first and greatest commandment

And the second is like it:

'Love your neighbor as yourself'".

GOD

God is defined as one living and true God.

We believe that God is the Creator of everything and that He exists eternally in three Persons.

The eternal God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit; who are eternally self-existent, self revealed, and function as one entity. Jesus Christ, who is God manifested in the flesh, is the second member of the Godhead, co-equal and co-eternal with the Father and the Holy Spirit.

THE TRINITY

God reigns in providential care of the universe

and He is a personal Father to those who become children through faith in Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the eternal Son of God who became incarnate, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born

of the Virgin Mary. He honored God and man through a sinless life and His sacrificial life and death provides for the opportune redemption

of mankind from sin’s penalty.

We believe our Lord Jesus Christ is coming back again just as He promised.

As Spirit, God exalts Christ and convicts of sin, righteousness and judgment.

The Spirit indwells every believer at the moment

of salvation, and enlightens and empowers the surrendered believer.

MAN

God created man in the image of God, as God’s crowning act of creation. Man was created good and upright, for God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness.” But man, by voluntary transgression, fell and his only hope of redemption is in Jesus Christ the Son of God.

SALVATION

We can have a personal relationship with God through salvation, God’s free gift to man. On the cross Jesus Christ became sin and sickness providing both salvation and divine healing for all mankind, being justified freely by His grace through faith. By admitting we have sinned and believing in the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, and accepting Him as Lord, we can spend eternity with God.

THE BIBLE

We believe the Bible to be God’s Word, a true and fully accurate account of God’s love for us.

Scripture was written by men divinely inspired and is the record of God’s revelation of Himself to man.

Its purpose is to teach us how to have a relationship with Him, worship Him, and bring Him glory.

important individuals

RANCH Hands Ministry and The RANCH

would not exist or have grown into what they

are today without some very important people.

We are forever indebted to their vision, belief

and leadership and they are missed dearly.

PHYLLIS SLOWTALKER

Anything that grows has roots and RANCH Hands Ministry is no different. The roots of RHM came in the form of a strong-willed, determined and resilient individual: Phyllis Slowtalker. Without her, RANCH Hands Ministry and The RANCH event would not exist. It was at her encouragement and desire to spread the Word of God that RANCH Hands Ministry was established.

Being widowed in your early 30's is a very tough situation to be put in. Add nine children to the circumstances and it goes from tough to outright daunting. Yet, Phyllis perservered and knew the only thing to be done was to move forward and figure out a way to provide a decent life for her children. One of the ways she did this was by becoming a believer and taking her kids to a local church. One way or another she made sure they made it to Sunday services so that they may learn about and bring Jesus Christ into their lives. It was this early experience that convinced her of the power of the Lord.

Jump forward about 50 years to 2010 and the annual RANCH event is two decades old and proving to be very successful in sharing the Word of God with others. However, Phyllis felt there was still more to be accomplished. Specifically she expressed there was a need for a church to serve those looking for a place to worship.

The Ranch Family assembled and discussed her vision and with her blessing and encouragement RANCH Hands Ministry was established.

Today the annual RANCH event and RHM Church continue to flourish and none of this would be possible if Phyllis did not give her life to the Lord all those years ago.

The Ranch Family matriarch was called to the Lord in 2019.

GLORIA CHEE

Gloria, along with her husband Leonard, established the inaugural RANCH event in 1991.

REV. ALVIN C. TSO

For over 25 years Rev. Alvin Tso was the featured speaker and spiritual backbone of RANCH. Alvin embodied the phrase 'Man of God' as his conduct was a great example for pastors, ministers and other men of God. He used his calling to teach others about Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

His unrelenting belief was as an inspiration to all people. His teaching and guidance continue to serve as encouragement and motivation within The RANCH.

The following was provided by daughter Roselyn Tso:

Ranch Hand Ministry celebrates a servant of God who has ministered across our great Navajo Nation, as well as many areas outside of our nation. The force behind this man of God is his wife and of 66 years, Margie Tso. Margie Platero comes from Borrego Pass, New Mexico. She left her home as a very young lady and relocated to Page, Arizona to live with her husband’s family. Soon after she was married, her husband left for the Korean War and she had to build her life in a land very far away from where she grew up. Even at this young age; Margie was a strong woman of strong will and helped build a family. Margie remains the foundation of this union and the family they raised together. They raised three girls and five boys. Once Staff Sargent Tso returned home from the War; he proceeded to indulge in a life riddled with alcohol and leaving for days at a time. He led this life and was known as the town drunk in Page. Over all these years with the help of Alvin’s oldest sister Nina Riggs and his mother Barbara, Margie managed to keep her marriage intact, raise her young family and keep the children safe,

In March 1961, Alvin’s sister Nina who was a catalyst in bringing the word of God to the area along with her husband Pete Riggs, Sr. was devoted to bringing the word to her family. Nina was one not to be denied her will and she was determined to save her brother from the destructive life he was leading. There was no one else who could better handle Mr. Tso, but his sister. Nina was persistent and on one Sunday she decided to find her brother and once again bring him her testimony and reassured him there was a better way and he could change his life. Of course Alvin thought he knew it all and was not going to be driven from his bar stool at Page Tavern. She left the establishment, but patiently waited in her truck until he eventually came out. At that point, he agreed to go to church with her. By the time they arrived church was over and the congregation was ready to leave; but only Nina could convince the congregation that they should have another service. Thankfully they had another service and Alvin gave his life to Christ that day. He walked out of the church and looked around and he could see a bright new day; one he could not remember ever seeing. He made his way home to Kaibeto to tell his wife and young family that he gave his life to Christ. From that day his work started as a man of God and never looked back.

Beginning at the age of 32, Rev. Alvin Tso ministered throughout Navajo Country for more than 50 years. As he grew in his Christian life he wanted to do and learn more; he could not learn enough or fast enough. He decided to be ordained in the Church of the Nazarene. He told his superiors he could not afford to go to the seminary to study for his ordination. They told him he could study on his own and they would test him on each subject matter. He worked night and day to learn, took his examinations and completed his studies. The corporate office was quite impressed he was able to accomplish this all on his own. His next dream was to walk the same steps Jesus took to his crucifixion and his eventual rising from the dead. He made the trip to Israel and walked in those very same steps and was baptized in the Jordan River.

During this time as Alvin grew in his spiritual life, Margie kept the family growing and the home alive. As the children became teenagers, there was a new personal challenge.  This was not an easy time for the children or the parents who had such a larger audience to care for and so little time to keep everyone cared for. The children began to make their own choices and some were angry because of the sacrifices or lack of a normal life; thus they took their own journeys. From 1999 to 2011, they lost four boys and one daughter.  During this time the family was reduced to just two daughters and two sons. Many would have blamed God for the losses and no parent should have to bury their own children, but they did each time and celebrated their lives. After 50 years of marriage; Margie became a partner to Alvin Tso and they became a much stronger force and they stood together and for the first time in her life; she experience the love and adoration of her husband.

In spite of the challenges and busy speaking schedules, they have also experience the joys of the successes of their two daughters and the redemption of their son Mr. Lawrence (Jay) Tso.  Together, they enjoyed their 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

The Tso’s ministered at a number of different locations throughout the Navajo Reservation.  Into his 80’s, the Rev. Tso continued to travel and minister the word of God. During his career, the Rev. Tso has participated in the Church of the Nazarene community at the local and national level. In addition to his ministry, Rev. Tso also served as the local Chapter official for more than 20 years and served as a life stock inspector for 12 years.  He also served on the Health Board and Grazing Committee. Mr. Tso is known for love of horseback riding on his ranch, which he often uses to prepare for his speaking engagements.

Rev. Alvin Tso passed on August 12, 2018, and is dearly missed.

BOBBY BOYD

Bobby was a long time RANCH supporter and a strong advocate of what RANCH represented. His guidance played an instrumental part in the early years of RANCH.

Bobby was not one to sit around and watch others work, he made himself readily available to assist however needed. During RANCH if others weren't ready he would take the initiative and get services started with prayer or a testimony and Bobby was not one to mince words when it came to the teachings of the Lord. He was a spirited song leader and always encouraged the men to take the stage and sing.

Bobby could be counted on to have a razor sharp knife in hand and ready to butcher half a dozen steers and a dozen sheep. He would arrive early to help with setting up for RANCH; raising the tents, building the stage, sound system setup or whatever needed to be done.

Bobby was the epitome of a tough cowboy and would often be found on The RANCH Trailride leading a round of prayer or witnessing to those in need.

Bobby will forever be in our memories.
